Secret Poem #1
She looks like a fish
I could never envisage kissing
She sounds like a snake
With all that incessant hissing
She hoots like an owl
When she thinks that she’s all alone
She’s like an avant-garde octopus
Frolicking in the foam
She’s a trainee disaster zone
Emotions like rubble are strewn
Like a freaky wet dream that will
One day lead to your ruin
I hope she’s not listening
To this less than flattering prose
I’d get a boot up my anus
And a chainsaw up my nose!

Bandage
Here’s a bandage for your feelings
A tourniquet to stop the bleeding
A soothing balm to aid the healing
Here’s some words to stem the sadness
A silly joke to calm the madness
A poke in the eye just for badness
Here’s a map to help find your way
Sage advice to keep doubts at bay
Some courage if you’re afraid

Rebirth of a Smile

Rebirth of a Smile
How fast a smile can disappear
Trace a backwards course from ear to ear
Eyes cast downwards, the lament begins
Played on the worlds smallest violin
Tread softly lest eggshells be crushed
Or over the edge you’ll be pushed
Spiralling silently into the void
At the very least you must be annoyed
Where did that pesky smile go?
Don’t ask us ‘cause we don’t know
You may never find it wherever you land
So make a new one – draw up a plan!

Mobile Phonies

Mobile Phonies
You’re never alone with a mobile phone
But in spite of this great invention
I feel ever increasing levels
Of alienation and disconnection,
I scroll this way – I scroll that way
I share this and I ‘like’ that
I leave encouraging comments like
“No, you don’t look fat!”
I’ll show you who I really am – or who I’d like to be
My Flickr stream is just a daydream
Sailing on a digital sea,
Information overload but I can’t pull away
Neglecting the here and now
That is until the bitter moment
When the battery runs out
I myself am a mobile phoney
That I cannot deny
I get excited at notifications
And the availability of Wi-Fi,
I even feel phantom vibrations
Does anyone else get those?
Or friend requests from people
That you don’t even know?
You’re never alone with a mobile phone
It’s a gateway to the world
Or an approximation of it anyway
Allow your expectations to unfurl,
I might just stick to taking pictures
And making phone calls
That’s really what they were invented for
After all

Stuck in a Dress

Stuck in a Dress
Have you ever been stuck in a dress?
I have once or twice I must confess
I can think of worse things in which to be compressed
And a silky dress is by far the best
There was one in particular that broke my wee heart
A tunic style number adorned with paisley-like art
It wasn’t very stretchy – it was a size sixteen
A risky endeavour but I was very keen
I fed my arms through, brought it down on my head
And as it slid down my body I felt a sudden dread
I dared not let it fall further or it would surely tear
A sad situation I couldn’t possibly I could bare
I tried not to panic or rip it in rage
After all it was such a pretty cage
How could I be so foolish – from me expect nothing less
How typical of me to get stuck in a dress
You’ll be pleased to note that in time I escaped
With careful wriggling off it scraped
I shook my head sadly surveying the scene
What was I thinking – a size sixteen?
There’s a lesson to be learned I guess
In future I must try my best
To not underestimate the size of my chest
Whilst attempting to don a non-stretchy dress!

A Promise

A Promise
I won’t put words in your mouth
Or ideas in your head
Or show you black and white photos
Of mouldy bread
I won’t put shoes in your fridge
Or swap your vodka for brine
I won’t reset your watch
To the incorrect time
I won’t distract you from doing
What you planned to today
Or make a giant model of
Your head in clay…”Hello!”
I won’t swat you when pretending
To kill a bee
Or roll my eyes
When you’re talking to me
I won’t say one thing
And then do another
Or alienate your friends
Or tickle your mother
I won’t answer the phone
In a high-pitched voice
Like an excited mouse
That’s gone all moist
I won’t forget your birthday
Or other important dates
Or wake you up early
When we’ve stayed up late
But I will say I love you
And mean it as well
It’s a pleasure and a privilege
To be under your spell

Angry at Shadows
Happily stealing leftover feelings
Scrape them away like potato peelings
Words are for writing and sometimes igniting
The fire inside when it’s time for fighting
The syllables mounting practically shouting
No virtue is made of the facts they are doubting
Geniuses fading once were so laden
With fantastic ideas they’re no longer parading
Cheerfully working although you’re uncertain
You’re pushing too hard and your insides are hurting
Promises broken sheepishly hoping
It’s not my eyes it’s my ribs you’ll be poking
Is it worth asking what straws you’ll be grasping?
And why you weren’t there when they done the unmasking
The cycle is ending the gender is bending
I won’t think twice about whose rights I’m defending
Movement is lyrical moonlight is cynical
The risk of opinion is swapped for a miracle
My temper forgot it happens a lot
He has such a shit memory of what he’s been taught
